The Best Skills in Life Are Free (but sometimes take time to acquire)

When it comes to work (and life) some skills are harder to learn—they take time, effort and dedication—but pay off in the long run.

Rachel Gillett, a careers reporter at Business Insider and previous writer and editor for Fast Company’s Leadership section, narrows down 10 skills that can be hard to learn, but pay off in the end. The following glances into several of those top 10 skills that are wise to invest in learning:

  • Time management: Highly valued by employers and essential to entrepreneurs, this skill tops most productivity and leadership must-acquire lists. Make lists, schedules and plan out your days in a way that works for you. This will help you get more done is less time. Remember: not every person manages time the same way—therefore, it’s important to find a system that words for you (and hold yourself to it!)
  • Positive self-talk: It’s important to remember that not everyone will think the best of you—but it’s crucial that you are confident and believe in yourself, even when others don’t. Be your own cheering squad—when you reach a major milestone or accomplishment (no matter how small), remind yourself that you’re reaching your goals.
  • Listening: With endless distractions around us—email notifications, social media alerts, tasks reminders—it can be hard to focus and participate in active listening. It helps to repeat what you’ve heard back to the person speaking. This ensures the most effective communication and that the correct message(s) are getting through.
  • Mastering your thoughts: To accomplish what you set out to do, be sure to consciously direct your thinking. The past tends to drive our thoughts—be mindful and train yourself to focus your thinking on the future—what are you ultimately trying to accomplish? This will help you to stay focused and be on the way to reaching your end goals!

Gillett also notes that skills like empathy, consistency, asking for help, and minding your business are among the top 10 skills that may take time to develop, but are essential to finding your path to success.
