Social Media Interaction: The Best Times to Tweet for Clicks, Retweets & Engagement

Twitter is a powerful social media tool—extreme amounts of data and content refreshes constantly on our screens in a matter of seconds. But how can we analyze Twitter data to work best for our tweets?

Jeff Haden, ghostwriter, speaker, LinkedIn Influencer, and contributing editor for Inc., has written over 50 nonfiction books, along with articles and content. The following summarizes data compiled by Buffer (a tool that lets your schedule, automate and analyze social media updates) regarding Twitter stats for the U.S., such as the best time to tweet and get more clicks, such as retweets:

  • Most popular time to tweet: Worldwide, the most popular time to tweet across all major times zones is between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. local time, while the fewest tweets are between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. People appear to be catching up on their news and content during the lunch hour—except in the Pacific time zone, within which the most popular hour to tweet is between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. (all other U.S. time zones are the noon timeframe).
  • Best times to tweet to get more clicks: The highest number of clicks per tweet occurs between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. while the fewest clicks per tweet happen between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. when tweet traffic is very high. For the Eastern time zone within the U.S., the best time to tweet for clicks is between 11:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. (this statistic also differs from time zone to time zone).
  • Best times for overall engagement with your tweet: Engagement includes clicks plus retweets, favorites and replies (all interactions together). On average, tweets sent between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. earn the most total engagement—the largest engagement per tweet occurs between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. while the least engagement happens during traditional work hours.
  • Best times for retweets and favorites: on average, tweets sent at 9:00 p.m. earned the most retweets and favorites while the highest number of retweets and favorites occurs between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

The information compiled by Haden also goes into best times to tweet in other countries as well.
