A One-word New Year’s Resolution

A One-word New Year’s Resolution

It’s that time of the year: we’re all looking at 2015 in retrospect celebrating successes and learning from mistakes. As we complete this process of self-analyzing, most of us would end up in making resolutions to live by in 2016 that will make us better at work and in life. All too often, most people give up on their resolutions too soon. So, as an alternative to locking yourself in to a specific sentence or unrealistic goal, author Gretchen Rubin offers us a solution: the one-word resolution.

Take one idea that you can consolidate in one word (or two) and make it the overarching theme for your year! Research shows that humans are wired to gravitate towards simple things. A simple, easy to repeat mantra for a resolution might be just what we all need to live by it for a whole year.

Do you have the tendency to get stressed easily? You might want to try “Breathe” for your resolution. Any time that you think that your work or life is getting intense, that you forget to lighten up or you seem to be taking yourself too seriously, repeat the mantra “Breathe” and watch yourself lighten up. To help you keep your resolution, look for inspiration from outside. Read literature on relaxation or even breathing, find time for yoga or meditation, partner up with a friend who can help you on this mission, or simply find time to reflect. They are sure to be your partners through the year.

Feel free to pick any word for 2016! Fun… style… energize… anything will work. Have fun at it and plan for a successful 2016!
