Boost Your Confidence at Work

Boost Your Confidence at Work

Having confidence at work is a great way to boost your energy, inspire others and motivate yourself to reach maximum potential. Personal achievement and satisfaction are a big part of your work life, and having confidence to reach those goals can supplement your capability on the job. Believing in yourself can help propel you to that next level at work.

Anka Wittenberg is senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer at SAP notes that building confidence doesn’t require a complete personality overhaul. She outlines some simply steps to take on the path of becoming more self-assured and boost your confidence, one step at a time:

  • Get out of your comfort zone: At work, it can be easy to stay within your comfort zone—you know what you are good at and how to accomplish these projects. However, in order to build new skills and boost your confidence, try something new! Whether that includes speaking at an event or volunteering to take on a completely new project that is outside your realm of knowledge and expertise, these are easy ways to push yourself outside your comfort zone and start to build your confidence.
  • Visualize what you want: Close your eyes and picture your ideal job—imagine this and then take steps to turn your vision into a reality. If you want to be a high-level executive or build a strong team, dress, talk and act the part! Start living it now—don’t wait until you’ve achieved it.
  • Create your own environment: Rather than moving on when a workplace doesn’t meet your needs, instead try reshaping it through your own personal actions. Brand yourself from within the organization and begin attracting people with similar values to your team. Motivate from within and create the type of environment that allows you to thrive.
  • Fake it ‘til you make it: You are more competent than you probably know… so start acting like it! Adopt the mindset that you know that you’re competent and able to complete the tasks, problems and opportunities that come your way. This will help you take more risks and overcome a fear of failure.
  • Be the change you wish to see: As Gandhi famously quotes, “be the change you wish to see in the world.” Use that as motivation to take these steps to build your own confidence and help others along the way. Giving positive feedback to others, and ask for feedback in return. Refuse to accept self-critical behavior, while helping your peers advance and build confidence along the way.

You may want to start this process by assessing your competencies—get out a pencil and write down all of the skills that you bring to the table at this moment. Include specific skill sets and general leadership traits that can help your organization succeed. This will help you to become even more confident when utilizing those skills both now and in the future. Others can also help to instill confidence in you—volunteer to take on a task at work. Once your peers see that you’re a team player and problem-solver, they will instill confidence in you which helps you to realize your full potential.
