Eliminate half-work at all costs

In this age of constant distraction, it is almost impossible to keep focus on one task. It is rare that we fully engage in the task at hand. This division of your time and energy is called “half-work”. Some examples of half work include:

  • Start writing a report but stop randomly to check your phone for no reason or open Facebook and Twitter
  • Try out a new workout routine, but two days later you try a different fitness program—you make little progress and start searching for something better all over again
  • Your mind (or your eyes) wanders to your email inbox while you are on phone with someone

The result is the same always—you rarely commit for extended periods of time, and it takes you twice as long to accomplish half as much. The best way to overcome half-work is to block out significant time to focus on one subject and eliminate all other distraction. To effectively do this, Clear suggests that when you dive into an important project, leave the phone in other room and shut down email, Facebook and Twitter. Imagine how much more you can achieve if you did the work you needed to do by eliminating half-work.

Do the most important things first

Prioritize your day by working on the most important tasks first. Decisions and choices that you make throughout the day tend to drain your willpower. You are less likely to make a good decision at the end of the day than you are at the beginning. If you get the most important thing out of the way in the morning, you will never have a day when you didn’t get something important done. By following this simple strategy, you will usually end up having a productive day—even if everything does not go as planned.

Reduce the scope, but stick to the schedule

It is important to hold yourself to a schedule and not a deadline. To counteract the unplanned situations, make a small shift in the way you approach your schedule. Try to put the schedule first, rather than the scope. For example, say you plan to work out for an hour in the afternoon, but your schedule gets crazy. By the time you’re supposed to work out, you only have 20 minutes to spare. You have two options at this point—the first being to skip the workout completely. The second option is to reduce the scope, but stick to the schedule. This is accomplished by getting a workout in no matter what. There is long term success using this approach, rather than the first option of skipping a task completely. The cumulative impact of always staying on schedule is huge—don’t be disheartened by the not meeting your original plan. That’s how little goals become lifetime habits.
